September is National Preparedness Month, a nationwide effort encouraging individuals and families to prepare for disasters and other emergencies. This year’s theme, “Americans Stand Ready,” is a timely reminder as we enter peak hurricane season.
Whether it's a hurricane, wildfire, or power outage, taking steps now can keep you and your loved ones safe later. Here's how to get started:

Know your risks. Understand what types of disasters are most likely in your area so you can plan accordingly.
- Make an emergency plan. Create a family plan that’s easy to follow and can help reduce panic, save time, and minimize costs when disaster strikes. Decide on a meeting place, identify escape routes, identify an out-of-state contact, and plan for the needs of vulnerable family members.
- Build an emergency supply kit. Stock up on essential items your household may need during an emergency. You need to put enough water, food and supplies in your kit for three to seven day for each person and pet. Keep your supplies in a place that’s easy to access and grab quickly if you need to evacuate.
- Stay informed. Download the Pender County Emergency Management app. Pender County Emergency Management app provides countywide emergency alerts.
